CCD Chairperson's Update - November 2014

Employment and Social Development Canada

On 4 November 2014, Nancy Milroy-Swainson, Director General Office for Disability Issues (Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC)) paid a visit to the CCD office.  Laurie Beachell, CCD National Coordinator and Ms. Milroy-Swainson discussed ESDC and CCD priorities.

Disabling Poverty/Enabling Citizenship

During November, CCD planned the 2 December 2014, public forum in Ottawa, where the Disabling Poverty /Enabling Citizenship Research team will share the findings of their five year research initiative.  For this event, Dr. Michael Prince, the project's co-principal investigator, developed a short paper, which summarizes policy reforms to improve the economic position of Canadians with disabilities.  Christine Elliott will be the guest speaker at the forum

Elections Canada

On 6 November 2014, Laurie Beachell participated in a meeting of an advisory committee that is assisting Elections Canada identify barriers in the electoral process.

Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)

On 10 November 2014, Vangelis Nikias, CRPD Project Manager, met with the CUPE Persons with Disabilities National Working Group to discuss articles of the Convention which relate to the Working Group's activities.

Zero Project

CCD completed the Zero Project's survey on the independent living and political participation. 

Council and Committee Updates

The CCD National Council and Executive and International Committees held conference call meetings this month. The highlights were: 

On 12 November 2014, the Executive Committee reviewed CCD's financial situation and made plans for the New Year.

The National Council, which met on 20 November 2014, brainstormed disability issues that should be part of the public conversation during the Federal Election which will occur in 2015.

On 27 November 2014, the International Committee met to discuss UN procedures governing shadow reports.
