Make EI Accessible and Inclusive to Canadian Women with Disabilities

31 March 2009—Today, the Council of Canadians with Disabilities (CCD) appeared before the House of Commons Standing Committee on the Status of Women and called upon the Federal Government to make EI more accessible and inclusive to women with disabilities by expanding eligibility criteria and expanding its coverage.

30 mars 2009 - Il y a deux ans aujourd’hui, le Canada participait aux Nations Unies à la cérémonie de signature de la Convention relative aux droits des personnes handicapées. En signant la Convention, le gouvernement fédéral avait manifesté son intention de ratifier ce traité en se conformant aux procédures canadiennes habituelles, notamment avec des discussions à huis-clos entre les gouvernements fédéral, provinciaux et territoriaux.

Pressure Mounting for Ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)

30 March 2009—Today marks the second anniversary of Canada’s participation in the signing ceremony for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which took place at the United Nations. By signing, the Federal government signaled its intent to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities by following typical Canadian procedures, with an emphasis on Federal, Provincial, Territorial discussions that take place behind closed doors.

At our Community and University Research Alliance (CURA) Team meetings in Winnipeg on January 6 and 7, 2009, questions arose and discussion followed around the meaning of concepts central to our research project.

Chairperson's Update: February 2009

The Government of Canada’s Federal Budget had a heavy focus on what has been termed initiatives that are shovel ready. We at CCD have also been busy building, putting down a strong foundation on a number of different fronts. This month, I will share with you information on areas where CCD is, or has been, building for the future.
